From mountains to sea in Italy, Slovenia and Croatia, May 14-24.

Route overview:

We start in Ljubljana, soon arriving in the stunning Julian Alps of Slovenia. Then, we head south to Italy to enjoy a pizza dinner or two at atmospheric Italian villages in the Fruili region. Then, onward to discover the warm, wine-growing, hilly Istrian Peninsula.

Day one, Thursday, will include some city riding which will turn to lovely one lane roads in the country, ending at beautiful Lake Bled. There are rolling hills.

Day six, Tuesday, we ride along quiet, flat to rolling, one lane roads, through the charming town of Cividale, to stay in lovely old farmhouse.

Days seven to 10 are on quiet hilly roads in the Istrian Peninsula, a Mediterranean climate with wineries.

We end the afternoon of Sunday May 24 in Piran, Slovenia (close to Trieste), and fly home on Monday May 25, Memorial Day.

This tour is for people who are in good biking condition and can fix a flat if needed. Some days are hilly with steep grades, and each person will carry their luggage in their own panniers. There may be cold and/or rainy weather. We will definitely get lost. There may be some accidental highway riding, and there may be dirt roads. There’s no backup ride if you get tired! This is a fun group trip, and people often ride together. But, they also can choose to ride solo and meet up for lunch and/or at the end of the day. Faster riders are welcome to go ahead. It is a leisurely trip - we usually average about 10mph - and we will stop for wine tasting, snacks, or whatever strikes our fancy. There’s no official leader or “sag” person (but of course someone will come find you if you get lost or have trouble!).

There is no cost outside of your own expenses.

If you would like a shorter trip, it’s possible to join for the first five days only.

 May 24 Sunday https://ridewithgps.com/routes/31518570 24 or 34 miles, there are a couple of options. Rob and I are heading to Venice at 4pm today. When you arrive in Venice, get off Piazzale Roma.Here you will take the boat (vaporetto) number 1 and get off at San Stae boat stop. You will walk on foot straight on until the Majer cafè, then turn on the right, cross the bridge, turn on the left and cross the bridge in your right. In your left there is Campo San Giacomo dell’Orio, straight on for 15 meters and in your left there is a white building with “La Patatina” restaurant, in the same building there is our B&B Patatina. Costs:

We will rent bikes from this company - https://www.rentabike.si/. Depending on which bike you rent, it will be around $175-$200 for the trip.

Meals - I would estimate about $40-70 per day. We dine as a group, but there is no obligation to join if you prefer some alone time or to save money.

Transportation - flights are between $700-$1000 RT, and then there are shuttles to and from the airport cities.

Flight options:

Best to fly in to Ljubljana, Zagreb, or Trieste. Fly out of Trieste or Venice. It’s probably easiest to talk to me because I have researched every option out there. Goopti.com offers shuttle services from all of these airports to the beginning and end of the trip.
